A smart solution for food ordering

JustChop-A smart solution for ordering food online.
JustChop is a food delivery mobile app that lets users order delicious meals from carefully curated restaurants and fast food outlets all over Lagos, Nigeria. This platform exists to provide ready-to-eat meals to young people living in Lagos — eliminating the time taken on market runs and food preparation, among others.
Food is one thing people dislike waiting for — especially when they are really hungry. The waiting isn't the only thing to be worried about — the food tasting bad, or almost getting sour, is another source of worry. Sometimes, it's difficult to get a delivery rider to deliver a meal when you've made an order.
With the rise of ordering food online, not having one reliable caterer was common for remote workers, busy 9-5ers and generally everyone else.
We needed to change the story.
We identified what we wanted to achieve
- To help users get their meals safely to them.
- To get meals to hungry users in time with fast delivery.
- To signup only certified and trusted restaurants/fast food outlets.
- To help restaurants owners expand their business to wider market.
- Easily get access to desired meals at carefully curated restaurants.
- Easily track order in real time and be in touch with dispatch rider.
- Repeated/Scheduled deliveries for the week or month.
- Fund wallet, placing order via wallet instead of using a card/pay on delivery.
- Remote workers.
- People with busy schedules.
- People too busy to cook everyday.
- People who want variety from different restaurants.
Identifying problems from existing apps
User-based identified issues
I conducted research with a set of people to have a broader view and a different perspective, and not just lean on my own assumptions. I had a chat with around 10 people who work remotely and order food online 4–5 times a week, to understand the pain points and stress they've experienced using any food delivery app. I also installed these apps myself — to get first-hand experience — breaking down these products, finding common flows, mental models and patterns I could adapt, and areas that could be improved on.
Research based need-to-have
After research, we categorised the possible features into need-to-haves and nice-to-haves. We focused on the needs of the target audience — features that would make it to MVP given limited time and budget.
Our small UX team of two collaborated to design high-fidelity prototypes. Workload was shared and each person had a defined task. We created this design centered around young people having a gratifying and seamless experience while using this product.

Nearby restaurants
One of the core ideas of this product is to help users locate restaurants closest to them without any hassle. This is the first screen the user is welcomed with, aiding faster search without logging in, signing up, or onboarding — so we don't interrupt their experience.

Scheduled delivery
In the spirit of giving our users control, they can schedule a delivery — same day, different time. It's totally up to them.

Order receiving preference
The idea was to let the user decide how they want to receive their meals — picked up, or delivered to their address. This way they're in control of everything, one of the core goals.

Restaurants rating
Good reviews boost sales while terrible ones can close you down. And in an age when everyone can be an online critic, ratings have never been more important.

Reoccurring purchase
This eliminates the constant and frequent ordering of food all the time. Users get to set a duration, start and end date, and get meals during this time.
Easy tracking
Users usually don't know the exact — or close to exact — location of drivers, and hence won't be able to direct them if need be. This screen takes care of that problem; users can easily track their order at any time.

Collaborating with the developers on this project wasn't a walk in the park. After handing off, we started out by having frequent scheduled weekly reviews for implemented designs.
The second designer and I doubled as product managers, ensuring designs were implemented in the right way, in sync with what had been designed.
A document was created to keep track of every piece of feedback highlighted from each review session, and followed up until all feedback was cleared out.
We moved on to testing internally — this exercise opened our eyes to helpful feedback (no bad feedback).
This was a very important project for me. After designs were completed, a thorough internal testing was carried out where a lot of helpful feedback helped improve the product even better. I learnt a lot about putting users and their needs first. Finally, engaging and carrying every member of the team along is a hard task, and should be done at the very beginning of the project — else there would be a lot of back and forth during the project. I'm looking forward to this project launching and having impact in Lagos, Nigeria and beyond (expansion).
Have something worth building?
I read every email. The best way to reach me is a short note about the problem — no deck required.
